Nate Ohms defeated Jacob Holmes(Shenandoah) 6-0, 6-1 in the first round.
Nate Ohms defeated Scott King(Glenwood) 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.
Nate Ohms defeated Matt Goracke(Red Oak) 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals.
Nate Ohms lost to Pete Walker(Red Oak) 1-6, 2-6 in the finals for second place.

“Nate redeemed himself today after a disappointing Conference Tournament by playing very strong tennis and finishing in second place and making State. Nate ran into Pete Walker in the final and struggled against him again which shows us that we need to keep working hard to improve in the next couple of weeks before the State Tournament. I am very proud of seeing Nate making State Tennis and look forward to seeing him compete there.”

Willy Henrich lost to Pete Walker(Red Oak) 0-6, 2-6 in the first round.

“Willy has been playing very well recently so it was just very unfortunate for him and the team that he drew the number one seed first round. It really hurt our team’s chances from placing in the top three. Willy has been a big part of the varsity team for four years and he will be greatly missed next year.”

Nick Petsche and Riley Finn lost to Jordan Nelson and Craig White(Red Oak) 3-6, 0-6

“Unfortunately, Nick and Riley had to play the number four seeded team in the first round so again, like Willy, made it really tough for us as a team to do well. We needed these guys to step up because they have the ability to play very well, as witnessed at the Conference Tournament. Today, that just didn’t happen. Both Nick and Riley will be back next year and I look forward to seeing their continued improvement.”

Jacob Petsche and Austin Euchner lost to Mitch Lieferman and Derek Tjepkes(Atlantic) 1-6, 1-6

“Jacob and Austin really picked up their game in the last couple weeks of the season. It was great seeing them get a win today which helped us get 5th place. Both Jacob and Austin will be back so we will be returning five out of our six varsity players. We will look forward to an improved team next season.”

“I was very pleased with our fourth place finish today, especially with the fact that everyone contributed points. We have lost a lot of close matches this year so the way we played today makes up for a lot of that. We showed a lot of determination in the extreme heat and played the best we have played all year.”

“Nate lost a tough first round match to Andrew Hrabik from Denison so it was a disappointing day for him as we were shooting for a top three finish. Nate didn’t quit though and finished in 5^th place going 2-1 for the day.”

“I thought Willie played outstanding today. He served and hit the ball very well and just played with a lot of confidence. He ended up in fourth place which we were very happy about.”

“Riley and Nick got out of the gate strong today winning their pigtail match and then they upsetting the #3 seeded team from Shenandoah 10-8. They ended up getting 4^th place which is excellent. This will definitely give them a lot of confidence heading into Districts.”

“I was very proud of how Jacob and Austin played today. They have struggled this year but they came together to get 8^th place and by doing so, got us one point which helped get us 4^th place in the tournament.”

The HCHS boy's tennis team ended the regular season with a convincing 8-1 win over Audubon, ending the year with a 3-8 dual record. "I was very pleased with everyone's performance today," Coach Chad Bruns said. "After playing all day yesterday at the Conference Tournament in very hot conditions, it was good to see everyone pick it up today and come away with wins." "Between this win and our fourth place finish at the Hawkeye 10 yesterday, our confidence and play is peaking at the perfect time."

The bright spots of the meet was Nate Ohms win over former state-qualifier Grant Nikseresht and Nick Petsche's win over Grant Stivers. "This was a big win for Nate today," Coach Chad Bruns said. "Grant has been one of the better players in the conference for several years now. This win should give Nate a confidence boost going into next weeks big matches against Abe Lincoln and Red Oak." "It was also nice to see Nick play well and get a big win."

HCHS Boy's Tennis lose to Lewis Central 1-8

With two varsity players missing today, the HCHS boy's tennis team struggled against a good Lewis Central team, losing 1-8. "It was a tough day for us with Nick and Jacob Petsche not playing. We moved two JV players(Alex Schaben/Matt Stessman) up to play at #5 and #6 while Austin Euchner moved up two spots and Riley Finn one spot. Add all of this together along with LC playing very well, explains why we struggled today," Coach Chad Bruns said. "This happens sometimes and you just have to role with it and hope people play their best".

The Cyclones are now 2-2 for the year.

HCHS Boy's Tennis Defeat Atlantic 5-4

The HCHS boy's tennis team defeated Atlantic 5-4 on Monday, April 11 in a highly competitive meet. "This was a great win for us today. Nate continued to play very well at #1 singles but I am also very happy with Nick, Riley and Jacob in how they played, Coach Chad Bruns said. "All three were in tight matches until about halfway through, but they all pulled away by winning four to five games in a row finishing off their opponents in impressive fashion."

Coach Bruns did note areas in need of improvement. "I would like to see us play better in doubles. I have been mixing the doubles teams around a bit early in the season to find who plays best together. Hopefully we will turn things around in our doubles matches very quickly as they are a very important part in winning meets."

The Cyclones are now 2-1 for the year.

The HCHS boy's tennis team lost 1-8 to Denison on Friday, April 8. The lone victory was Nate Ohms at #1 singles. "It was a tough day for us. Denison is a very talented team with five seniors and one junior playing varsity. Their experience really showed today against our younger players. I was glad to see Nate win his singles match. He played a great match against a very talented, athletic player in Petersen" Coach Chad Bruns said.

The Cyclones are now 1-1 for the year.

HCHS Boy's Tennis Open With 6-3 Win Over TJ

The HCHS Boy's tennis team opened the 2011 season with a 6-3 victory over Thomas Jefferson on Tuesday, April 5. "With three new varsity players playing in their first meet, I knew there would some nerves today and that showed a little bit with some inconsistent hitting. Overall though, we played well enough to defeat a much improved TJ team," Coach Chad Bruns said. "Nate, Willy, Nick and Jacob all played very well in there singles matches getting wins for us. In doubles, the teams of Riley/Nate and Jacob/Austin got wins for us as well. Jacob and Austin played a marathon match that lasted over an hour and a half winning in tiebreaker. It was a great win for the team and for their confidence."

Harlan Community hosts Abraham Lincoln on Thursday and Denison on Friday.

HCHS(1-0) defeated TJ 6-3.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! It's fabulous, it's fierce... it's too much to handle! Welcome to the 7th Annual Film Festival! Okay, maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself. The actual event isn't until March 19th, but the videos can be turned in right about now! I'm Danielle Hernandez for School News, and this blog is a shameless advertisement of the upcoming Student Council spectacular.

So what exactly is the Film Festival? Well, it was started about seven years ago (go figure,since it's the 7th annual, right?) by Todd Heim. It was his bouncing baby project for Student Council, and all proceeds went to finding a cure for cancer. Unfortunately, the year after he graduated he himself was diagnosed with cancer. Leukemia if I remember right... Bad stuff. In honor of his original dream and his unfortunate condition (he did beat it, by the way) the Film Festival has remained a fundraiser for cancer research. That's right, so when members of the community and high school students gather in the auditorium to watch the selected films and witness the awards ceremony, they can feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing they did something super for the world.

Maybe you're a student reading this right now. I can only hope. Knowing our school, you've probably had to do a video project for class at some point. Am I right? Spanish? English? Both! Or, maybe you're one of those super awesome kids who makes videos in your spare time. If not, maybe you should pick it up. While a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth easily a million ten years from now. Well, there's finally something you can do with those videos clogging up your harddrive. Entry forms are available in the office, NOW, as you read this! Several teachers and two students from each grade will be judging and giving out such awards as 'Best Director', 'Best Foreign Film', and 'Best Fight Scene'. What sort of awards are we talking here? Barbies. Oh those plastic, cheesy dolls your little sister still secretly/embarrassing plays with? You betcha. At the Oscars, they give out tiny (admittedly kind of creepy) golden menfolk. And HCHS is no different! Except the obvious difference that the golden menfolk are golden painted Barbies. They're pretty fancy, just ask David Siebert, whose cinematic team won like seven last year.

At the recent Student Council Winter Retreat a few new ideas for this year's film festival were thrown around... We're talking to the School Store about Film Festival T-Shirts. Pretty much every other event gets a spiffy warddrobe, why not this?! Also, a suggestion was to get a fancy red carpet background for attendees to get pictures by. The dress code for the Film Festival has formal-wear for an option, and decked out in Prom-style attire is definitely a red carpet look! So, look out for order forms and get those digital cameras ready for one of the best photo-ops since... ever.

So please, turn in those videos ASAP! They're all due March 16th, preferably on some kind of flash drive or CD. And if you need any further incentive to come to the film festival, yours truly will be an announcer. Good stuff! You don't have to have a video entered to attend, and well, you don't even have to go to school here. Bring your grandparents, we don't mind. It's a night of good-natured, hilarious fun. Hello HCHS! This semester has sure gone by quick and as we all prepare for the longest break during the school year, I’d really hate to kill the mood. However, it must be done. Sorry! Much like April showers bring May flowers, Christmas break tends to usher in some freak blizzards. Unfortunately, a lot of students live in the country. ‘Blizzard’ translates to ‘demonic force that leaves you snowed in your house with no electricity’. But, on the bright side, there are some ways to stay safe, and hopefully have fun.

The first piece of advice I have for you is to stay inside if the weather’s promoting a blizzard. Stay in one room and have plenty of flashlights/candles on hand. Clearly, being cooped up over break doesn’t sound like the funnest thing in the world, but it leaves a lot of time for family bonding, or maybe you were lucky enough to get snowed in at a friend’s house. Activities that don’t require electricity are probably the safest bet, and believe me I know just how hard it is to come up with non-technology-based fun in the 21st century. So, here are a few suggestions. Paper-football isn’t just confined to the classrooms, my friends. Make a few targets: the obvious trash can, a hole between furniture, your annoying sister’s mouth… And suddenly the game becomes a lot more interesting. Board games are something I recently rediscovered, and it’s safe to assume everyone probably has at least one in a closet somewhere. Risk and Monopoly are games that can last forever, so it’d be pretty easy to kill time with those. Still sounding lame? Raise the stakes, and have everyone throw in some Christmas money as a jackpot for the winner. Profit = fun. Disclaimer: HCHS School News does not promote gambling.

The next piece of advice I have for you kind of goes along with the first piece. I told you to stay inside, and you didn’t listen. That wasn’t very smart of you now was it? So, now you’re driving in a whiteout and end up getting stuck. Nice one, Einstein! Here’s what you should do… Call for help. (Obvious right?) However, if the weather’s really that bad it could be a while. Get out of your car and clear out some space around your exhaust pipe, so you don’t die from carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s recommended that you only turn on your car’s engine and heater for ten minutes every hour. If you plan on traveling at all during the winter, you should have an emergency kit. Put some important items in there for those just-in-case situations. Lots of Blankets, food (preferably the kind that doesn’t rot, nobody likes the kid with a smelly car), flashlights, and warm clothes are all an excellent idea.

So, please students of HCHS, I really hope our Christmas Break is awesome. But let’s all be smart and plan for the worst, just to be safe! I know I’m probably not the only one who’s hoping for just a Dairy Queen Blizzard this winter, but it’s probably not in the cards. So be safe, stay warm, and keep checking in to the Newsblog! Where's My Money?

As I sit down at my computer desk for about the fourth straight hour, my first reaction is to start typing a meaningless essay when suddenly- BAM! I snap out of it and realize I'm actually working on my blog. Oh, silly me. I guess it's easy to forget such things when I'm applying for every other opportunity for free cash pushed my way. Everything just sort of starts to blend together... I start to wonder what's what anymore. And I got to thinking... I'm sure the readers at HCHS wonder, too. So, here's a handy blog about all the ka-ching that's up for grabs!

First off, fill out the FAFSA, or at least plan to. What's the FAFSA, you ask? Free Application for Federal Student Aid. If you want financial aid for college, you'll need to fill it out after January 1st. It's like a report of all the money your family made filed after taxes and junk. It's super important if you want big money, like myself!

Alrighty, got that handled? Well, here ya go then. There's the obvious: Scholarships. Seniors, if you haven't tried for at least one yet, you might want to get on that. Why? Because these are arguably one of the best ways to go about paying for college. All you really do is ask for money, and private organizations/loaded individuals give it to you. Cake money! You don't have to pay it back, and there's a million and one of them out there to apply for. Are you smart? Here's some money! Are you super broke? Here's some money! Are you a stud on the b-ball court? Here's some money! Are you not talented, but still want money? Here's some money, now go work hard in college! You're in business.

Next up, it's grants. These are a lot like scholarships, except instead of private money, you're getting it from the largest cash cow ever spawned: THE GOVERNMENT. Yes, I see the dollar signs flickering on in your eye sockets now. You still need to apply for them, and if you get them, they still don't need to be paid back. Alright!

Then there's my least favorite: Loans. These don't require you to be anything special, but you have to pay them back. Obviously, if it comes down to loans or no college, you should go for loans. In the end, a college degree is probably going to get you a job where you can pay off your debt eventually. This is what Mr. Swanson would call "good debt". It'll pay off in the end.

While you're in college, there's a few other things you can do to pay for it.

Work-Study is offered at some schools. Basically, your money from a part-time job program goes right back into your schooling. In theory, it kind of stinks that this isn't 'free money' but, hey, maybe you can get a sweet job on campus related to your major or something you're interested in. Work can be fun, right?

Also, have you considered military service? If you're not exactly sure what you want to do with your life yet, but you're confident you'll figure it out eventually and don't want to waste your time in the meanwhile, maybe you should enlist. You can learn discipline, make some tough friends (that could probably totally back you up in a fist fight), and it looks pretty killer on job applications. Plus, the military tends to pay a pretty big chunk (if not all) of your schooling. Kaaaa-ching!!!

To be completely honest, there's one hundred and one ways to pay for college. I haven't really tapped the well of coinage there is out there that could be yours. If you want to get a degree, it's not impossible. Just work hard in high school and work just as hard on your applications. Are there some really good ways you'd like to share? Superintendent's Corner #3

This message is from Mr. Wagner, HCHS's superintendent. It is a feature that appears in the Harlan Tribune every so often.

In keeping with the spirit of the previous two editions of the superintendent’s corner, I’d like to start to drill a bit deeper on the topic of the upcoming PPEL and ISL levy renewals. Quickly recapping the previous comments, there are three main takeaways from those editions. 1). Both of these levies are not new, rather they have been in place since 2001 and 2002 respectively. 2). The approximately $1.1 million dollars generated by these levies are very important to the school district. Last year, 36 positions and $2.2 million dollars were cut from the district’s budget, intensifying the importance of these monies generated by the PPEL and ISL. 3). We strongly encourage folks to go out and vote. The only items on the ballot on December 7th will be PPEL and ISL.

Ok, so we’ve recapped some basic information concerning PPEL and ISL and now let’s try and get a bit deeper without confusing folks as this topic can get extremely complex. Outside of the obvious benefits of the $1.1 million generated from the two levies, there are some additional benefits to the district if both of these levies are renewed. Currently we have funds tied up that must be placed in reserves to ensure we have the means to pay off some existing debt within the district. Once the levies are renewed, these monies are no longer required by law to be restricted because the monies generated through the renewal will be adequate to pay off this debt in the future. For example, if you have ever rented a property, there likely has been a deposit you need to put down before moving in. The deposit ensures you respect the property and at the end of the lease the property will be released back in the same condition as it was received. This would result in receiving your deposit back. This essentially is the case with some of the existing debt the school district has. If the levies pass, it would be like returning our deposit. In addition, these levies would assist us in replacing dollars lost due to the decrease in enrollment we have incurred this year and help slow potential further reductions in people and programs going forward.

I was speaking to a senior the other day and we were discussing these levies as this senior is old enough to vote and I thought his words were worth mentioning. After taking some time to explain the situation and the importance of the levies, he quickly quipped, “it appears to me that ultimately the real winners or losers in this are the students”. I tried to deflect the statement, so as not to put undue pressure on any one group, but he was correct. Keeping in mind the students in this conversation is important as well. Educating students at the level of excellence we’ve come to expect is why we do what we do and why this election is so important. Thank you.

Heads Up: Raise Your Arms

Most days at school, doodling on your body is viewed as an act of boredom. We've all been there... The teacher keeps droning on and you're all out of paper, but hey, your hands, arms, and sometimes face are open canvas. But what if your body could be used to spread a message? Something more meaningful than 'Look at how productive I was in Calculus'?

Readers may recall a day last year when LOVE was written on the wrists of students. Perhaps you tossed it off as another random doodle, after all, that word is tossed around an awful lot these days... But was this the supposed deeper meaning body art deserves?

Indeed. To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit organization bent on educating about and preventing depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. Next Friday, November 12th, is the next scheduled To Write Love on Her Arms Day (via Facebook). If you feel like spreading the message that we were all "created to love and be loved", then bust out those Sharpies and spread the word.

Sometimes just reaching out can save a life. Some people go through life believing they aren't worth anything. But every life matters, and living your life to its full potential is definitely worth something.

TWLOHA donates profits from merchandise and donations on the website to helping those with self-hate seek help. They have many speakers who go and present to schools. Their website is full of many statistics, phone numbers, and ways to help those in trouble.

So, if your arms are otherwise available from long sleeves/extensive bracelets, be sure to join in and help the cause. It only takes four letters, and awareness is a step towards recovery. Get out there, grab a marker, and do some good.

Tuesday morning, a distressing announcement was made by Mr. Connell. Late Monday afternoon, Julio Caceres passed away due to complications from alcohol poisoning. HCHS students were rattled and stirred. Julio was a good friend, student, and all around good person. Tears have been shed for a beautiful human being, but even those not close to Julio now have reason for alarm. In the shadow of such heartache, there's now the question of how much more can Harlan take? Action 3 News out of Omaha has now questioned the integrity of Harlan, and this has many students and parents outraged.

Instead of focusing on the memory of Julio, reporter Dave Roberts chose instead to describe the declining state of Harlan Community High School in his story. He quoted Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor Lindsay Zortman, who apparently used to work in Harlan, as saying such things as "'there is nothing for teens in that community'" and "'nearly a fifth of the Harlan High School student body admittedly use drugs and alcohol'". In the videos, he is shown knocking on the door of Marcus's house and having the door closed in his face to "No comment."

This report has sparked a facebook revolt with sixty four comments and counting. This video, neigh this entire series, has been viewed as a skewed perception of the student population and community as a whole. Such comments have been made to defend the quality of the community and the unfortunate death of Julio. Cries like "investigate more thoroughly before you make assumptions about an entire community" and "this town is having enough of a hard time grieving and mourning the loss of a good friend without stories like these" are common pleas. Steps have been taken and plans have been made to demand a formal apology to the school system.

First I’ll start off with a long list of ‘Thank yous’ to all of the
animals sharing my home at the moment. Thank you, Bullet, Frankie,
Lucy, Key, Booster, Booner, Cherokee, Stormy, Kentucky Lightning,
Perry, Edwin, Razzle-Dazzle, Moon unit, and Daisy, thank you for
bringing such joy to my life. There have been many animals before
them, including more dogs, more cats, pairs of short-lived chickens,
rabbits, frogs, fish, lizards, hamsters, fiddler crabs, and birds.

Thank you to the dogs who allowed themselves to be dressed, have
their nails painted, and treated like horses to a 10 year old girl.
There have been birds who, if not liked by the girl, would have been
eaten by the sleek and sly grey tabby cat. And we can’t forget the
wiener dog who had been hit by a semi truck and spun like a football,
dropped down the stairs, and kicked off the bed in the night.

Studies show that more than 57% of U.S households own one or more
animals, so to those of you who have never owned a pet, I would
suggest you go adopt one as soon as possible. There is plenty of
scientific research that proves animals are good for your health!
Research conducted in retirement homes has proved that within just ten
minutes of interaction with an animal can lower blood pressure and
increase finger temperature, both signs of relaxation. They also
improve alertness and mood. Dogs can be used with children who are
undergoing stressful or scary procedures, by calming them down. Dogs
make great companions, ‘mans best friend,’ they are always there to
greet you when you get home, always ready to play, never mad at you
for something you messed up or didn’t do right, and they also
encourage exercise! Taking your dog on a walk will keep you healthy
and slim. Animals are always there to play, to lean on, and to offer a
listening ear. If you’re allergic to pet dander or fur, choose another
furless and featherless pet, like a new dog hybrid (Cockapoo’s,
Corkie’s, and labradoodles) or a bird or reptile. Make sure if you are
new to owning animals, you choose one whose personality, size, health,
and cleaning requirements fit your daily life. Animals need just as
much love as we do, and they need to be kept clean and healthy.

Animals are a wonderful thing to have around, and they teach you
countless things in life. They bring people pure joy, excitement, and
love. Pets are straight-forward about their needs, and they will beg
until they get them.
The animals I have now each bring me something new and exciting. I
have dogs, Bullet and Frankie, who beg for my affection, and food,
whenever they are around. My cats, Booster, Lucy, and Key, just want
to cuddle up in my lap and fall asleep. They depend on me for food and
shelter, but can also find these things on their own. My horses,
Stormy and Cherokee, rely on me for exercise, food, and to keep them
clean and healthy. Horses are a big responsibility and since they
recently ate all of the grass in their pasture, they have to be fed
hay several times a day. Horses love to run, and they love going out
for rides.

My peacock, Perry, is such a beautiful creature, who we
didn’t expect to get along with my other animals, yet, they all love
him, and he yearns to hang out with my 4 ducks. Peacocks have amazing
eyesight, can fly long distances, surprisingly, for how big they are,
and sleep on perches at night, not cuddled up in their feathers. My
ducks Edwin, Razzle-Dazzle, Daisy, and Moon Unit are awkward and
hilarious birds, who follow each other around, can be taken into
public to follow you around, and love worms and cat food. Kentucky
Lightning is my ferret, and she can get stinky! Ferrets have a dance
called the ‘weasel war-dance,’ they do this when they are excited and want to
play. It is a serious of chirps and jumping sideways, or moves called ‘dooks.’ I
never thought a ferret could be so funny and playful, and so sweet and
cuddly when they are worn out. Ferrets make great pets and teach you
tons of responsibility because there cages need cleaned every day,
and they drink tons of water.

Last, but definitely not least, Booner,
my adorable baby white-tail deer. I found him in a field about five
months ago, and he was so little he couldn’t even walk yet. I had to
bottle feed him three nine ounce bottles of goats milk three to five
times a day until he was old enough to start eating grass, corn, and
grain. He took a lot of responsibility, but I knew I would raise him
to be healthy. He recently lost all of his white spots, and grew in
little antlers. He follows me around when I’m outside and kisses me
all over my face. Booner definitely taught me a lot of responsibility,
a lot about deer, and a lot about relationships. I think he will teach
me even more with the months to come.
These are my pets and they bring me a lot of happiness. I wouldn’t be
who I am today without them. They are my pets, my friends, and my
family.

Dress Me Up, Before Ya Go Go!

It's a Nightmare on Elm Street. In the dreams of his victims, a specteral child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him. But in the hallways of HCHS, a different kind of monster plagues the students and faculty. And that monster is... the glory that is Dress Up Days. For five days the students strut their stuff down the hallways, and the sky is the limit.

For years, anyone and everyone associated with Harlan Community High School have been invited to join in the festivities of Homecoming Week by dressing according to the themed days. Traditionally, Monday has always been Pajama Day and Friday the legendary Red and Black Day. But Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are up in the air. So, I, Danielle Hernandez for School News, have taken on the task of recording the 2010 Homecoming Dress Up Days.

So, Monday rolled around and students rolled right of bed and headed to school. Pajama Day has always been a favorite, for the simple reason that it's easy, comfy, and hard to forget. As previously stated, Monday has always been Pajama Day. So if you forget, I would suggest getting yourself checked out. Best Dressed boy was Mason Fah, who dawned a red onesie, complete with footsies. There was a tie between Alex Hansen and Emily Assmann. And, as predicted, Mrs. DuVal walked away with a five dollar certificate to Cylcone Corner with her ensemble. You go girl!

Tuesday was comparable to a rainbow vomiting on all of the students. Technicolor tights were seen on the ladies below the waist while, unfortunately for many, bare thighs were exposed by the menfolk. This day was definitely a spectacle, as many ladies contributed to Global Warming with their excessive hairspray and gigantic, cheesy scrunchies. But aside from the ecological damage, it was a pretty enjoyable day. Best dressed male went to Alex Markham, who came prepared for tennis at the local country club with exposed white thighs. Best dressed girl was Jandy Johnston, who looked like she walked right out of a Jane Fonda video. Mrs. Lansman earned her title (and her calves for that matter) by jumproping all day long.

Wednesday was a throwback to my freshman year, with Duct Tape/Trash Bag Day making another appearance. Students got creative by designing entire outfits from the supplies easily found at home. A common theme that day was the coveted designer tape, with many patterns and colors being incorporated. David Siebert came to school wearing a trash can, and thus won himself Best Dressed. Chandler Mores was the winner for Best Dressed girl, and Best Dressed teacher was Mrs. Rasmussen.

On Thursday, the theme for those not participating in Powderpuff was Hippie Day. Tye-dye, bell-bottoms, and floral print filled classrooms while the students rocked the peace sign in all their pictures. It was good times to be had by all. Shelbie Jacobson looked postively retro in her dress and boots, and won herself Best Dressed. As did Nick Hadfield, with his torn jeans and laid-back style. Mrs. Rasmussen went back to back with her victories this week, a feat that will not soon be forgotten.

Bow Season: Open

September 13th, bow season, Council Bluffs, IA. Hunters ages 12 and up, sheathed in orange vests so they stick out like a sore thumb in the thick forestation for safety. Bows strapped to backs, arrowheads down. Knee-high brush scraping against your rough pants doesn’t bother you a bit. On the prowl like tigers, hunters move out in packs.
Spotted baby white-tail deer prance behind their delicate mothers, turning into a blur as they fly past the awaiting hunters. A bow raised, a child in the way, disaster.

Hunter safety, you must know it to hunt, your first thoughts must always be about safety. Sure, you want that buck with immense antlers, or that thick meaty doe, but your safety comes first, and the safety of those around you. Sometimes you’ve just got to know when to let the deer escape. There are many things you should be aware of when going on a hunt, alone, or with a group. You want to always take a flashlight, some sort of first-aid kit, a knife, and any other survival devices you might need, just in case. Try to carry a cell phone with you at all times, on silent of course, just in case of an emergency so you can call for help right away. All children hunting should have completed a Hunter’s Safety Course before ever entering the timber with a weapon of their own or with the intent of firing a gun. Always make sure you have something bright on, usually orange, so you are not mistaken as game to another hunter. More times than not, a tree stand will provide even more safety as you are off of the ground and less likely going to be mistaken for game. But, you must always make sure your tree stand is sturdy enough to climb up on to, and that all your equipment is strapped in securely.
Always inspect your arrows closely to make sure there is no serious damage. If they are bent or cracked they can fail when shot and end up in personal injury. If you have a successful deer hunt, always wait a while before you go up to the wounded or dead animal. Animals in distress can cause major damage as they try to get up when they are scared. Antlers on the male deer can cause serious injury and even death. Always approach the animal slowly to ensure that it is passed and that you are not putting yourself in any danger.
If you have children or new hunters with you, always talk to them and make sure they know what you’re doing, and where you’re shooting at all times. Always make sure any rambunctious kids are out of the way, quiet, and still before making any move to even raise your bow.

Hunter safety, even though I don’t hunt, is a big issue with teenagers and even some adults. You always have to be safe when hunting. Deer get aggressive and can cause damage, just as well as your bow or shotgun can. Be safe hunting this year, and always.

Wednesday was a really big day for America, and it wasn't because it was Breakfast Pizza day at HCHS (though I would definitely argue that it was a close second). No, the real importance of Wednesday, September 15th, lays in its date. Beginning yesterday, and carrying on until mid-October, it is Hispanic Heritage Month. As a Puerto Rican American, I really value this. Clearly, since I'm not completely Puerto Rican (it's not like my ridiculous whiteness gives it away or anything), I haven't really been exposed to be Hispanic Heritage. So, it's a good excuse to learn more about my Hernandez family history. But more importantly, and probably a lot more interestingly to you, what is the history of Hispanic Heritage Month?

So, here's how the story goes... Way back in 1968 Lyndon Johnson approved a Hispanic Heritage Week. Alas, Hispanics have played a huge part in America. Do the states Calfornia, Florida, Texas.... New MEXICO mean anything to you? All of these territories were first settled by the Spanish, and some remained under Mexican control for quite a while. So, in 1988 Ronald Reagan expanded it into an entire month of heritage celebration. That's more like it! But why does it fall on September 15th? That seemed awfully random to me, and probably to you readers out there too. But the 15th is not just some random day. The anniversary of five, count them FIVE, Latin American countries' independence that day. And three more Hispanic countries' celebrate theirs in the next several days. Pretty awesome choice of a date, if you ask me.

Speaking of 'if you ask me', you're probably wondering what exactly the term 'Hispanic' refers to. What's the difference between a Hispanic, Mexican, and Latino? Well, by definition, Hispanic means "of or relating to a Spanish-speaking people or culture." Meaning, people from Spain, Mexico, Cuba, or Peru, for example, are all examples of Hispanics. Latinos are people hailing from Latin America, specifically. And well, Mexicans are obviously just people from Mexico. There's your nifty little explanation.

So, what's the feeling about this around HCHS? There are Hispanics among us! So, what do the readers have to say? Do you feel that Hispanic Heritage Month is a great thing, and why? Well, About That Center.

Ba ba da da! Imaginary trumpets sounded as perhaps one of the greatest openings to ever take place in the history of Harlan (and dare I say it the world?) took place only a few short weeks ago. A fabulous place to get fit, kill boredom, make money, get out of those gosh darn cornfields... What could I be referring to? Why none other than the awesome Petersen Family Wellness Center and Lewis Family Aquatic Complex.

Construction started in December of 2008, and now the centers are in full boom. The facilities offer a variety of things to enjoy like a dry sauna, multiple playing courts, pool, and ridiculously nice workout equipment. The open houses they held were packed with people wanting to get a gander at all of the new stuff, and since then memberships have been incredibly popular. According to Sara Pape, "memberships have nearly doubled what was expected!"

Senior Dylan Greer was "totally" excited about the wellness center. "I haven't been fit in years!" But on a more serious note, he "really likes the opportunity to swim and exercise in more unique ways."

Around the school, conversations often center around the early morning workouts everyone has participated in and plans to join upcoming programs (such as yoga, starting on October 4th). American teenagers being excited about getting into better shape is definitely a refreshing change of pace. But another great chance the PFWC is offering is something American teenagers have been known to love... money.

That's right, there's plenty of high-schoolers working at the recently opened party central. Ellen Klitgaard, Joe Schmitz, Andrew Markham, Sara Pape, Dylan Greer, and Tannis Belisle are just a few. I know from personal conversations with teenage employee, Sara "Papey" Pape, that "the managers are trying to hire more lifeguards and daycare providers so that the center can accomodate more people." So, if you'd like a job where you can spend time with young children and maybe get in a sweat afterwards, you know where to go.

So, there you have it: the scoop on the brand spankin' new fitness/wellness/aquatic/super-awesome center. Photography. Life through the lens. Dorothea Lange, Jonathan Mehring,
Ben Hattenback. Some legends, some amateurs, some winners of a $200
prize in a magazine. Regardless of age, location, or career,
phenomenal pictures are (or were) being taken. Nikon, Canon, Pentax,
all great machines of vision. But no matter the machine, $50 or $1000,
a great picture comes from the photographer, not the camera.
Photography to me is not just a hobby, it’s a passion. It’s a way to
see the world in a whole new perspective. It’s a way to capture an
image, a moment, forever inside a little box. With a camera you can
bring out emotion, deep feelings from a person, a place, or even a
simple bug.
Nature photography helps you to experience new and rare things, and
feel like an important piece of the puzzle called life, that is why nature and animal photography is what I love to do. This article isn’t just about photography though, it’s about finding something you love to do, helping you find a new hobby to let stress out, and to find things that interest you that may benefit you in the future; near or far.
Everybody needs a release now and then, we all need that one thing that keeps us smiling and interested in life. Sometimes, I know from experience, our hobbies are just what we need to keep our heads above water.

In the first picture I have a photo of my eye, with some rainbow eyeliner on. A simple picture taken in a split second, and you can look at it and wonder what the girl is thinking. It almost looks like a sad girl. The simplest of pictures can bring out emotion.

Photography can be used in many ways to bring out different things from the object being photographed. The next picture is of a band member, on stage, belting his heart out, the simple muscles shown on his arm and the clenched fist show passion, and show that holding a microphone is what he loves to do. This photo was taken with a Canon, model S5 IS. I love this picture because it brings out passion, and I love how the musician falls into the ink black background. To me, it shows that he is part of the music, he is the center of attention.

The last photo is obviously, the butts of six cows. I think this picture shows that not all photography is ‘powerful,’ but sometimes humorous. Pictures like this one show up on silly cards in stores.
My hobbies are taking care of my animals, and taking pictures of them. No matter what your hobby is, always enjoy it. If you don’t feel like doing it, don’t, you shouldn’t have to force yourself to do something you love. Hobbies are something that comes natural whether it’s photography, sports, drawing, dance, music, whatever, don’t force it. Embrace your hobbies, and maybe someday they could become more than ‘just a hobby.’

The HCHS boy's tennis team got 7th place at the Hawkeye 10 Tennis Tournament on May 10 and 11. "We were one point away from fourth place so overall we did well," Coach Chad Bruns said. "Unfortunately, we lost some close matches that could have pushed us to fourth place. I was very pleased with Mitch and Nate's third place finish at #1 doubles and also Dan and Nick's 5th place finish at #2 doubles. They played very well all day." Nate Pattee and Willie Henrich also got points for the Cyclones at #1 and #2 singles, respectively.

HCHS Boy's tennis Defeat Red Oak 5-4!!

For the third time in roughly twenty years, the HCHS boy's tennis team beat Red Oak in a tennis duel. "This is the third time in my twelve years coaching that we have beaten Red Oak," Coach Chad Bruns said. "It's just tough to beat them as they are very well coached by Coach Martinez and are always fundamentally sound from top to bottom. They are always at the top of the conference in tennis so it is an honor to beat them," Bruns added.

The meet was tied 3-3 after singles. "Nate Ohms, Willie Henrich and Nick Petsche played extremely well in their singles matches," Bruns said. "I was very proud of Nick today. He has had his ups and downs this season but played his best tennis of his career today and showed what he is capable of in the future.."

The meet came down to doubles. After losing the #1 doubles, the #2 and #3 doubles teams both came from behind to win in two very tight matches. "I was very pleased with our #2 and #3 doubles teams," Bruns said. "Both were down and looked almost out but both teams found a way to win. I was very proud of them and our entire team today!"

Iowa Western Community College is a very popular college. It has been known for many years and it is still growing in population. I chose IWCC because it is very close to my home and it was also a lot cheaper than most colleges. If I would miss a class or want to take one while I am in Harlan I can do that as well. Just have to go down to the Iowa Western building on Highway 59.

Most colleges you have to pay extra for meal plans and not have a choice. Well IWCC has a choice you can both live in the suites and have to pay for a meal plan or the option of living in the apartments. Since there is a kitchen you don’t need to pay for a meal plan. You also have the option too if you would like so that is very handy. I can just go over to the lunch room anytime if I don’t have any food. The lunch over there is only four dollars.

I think they also have a lot of good programs. There is a really good band and choir program down there for the kids who are interested in that. Even 89.7 the River radio station broadcasts in the building. They have a big campus so lots of room for students. The book fees are very cheap for the classes that I am taking too and they are really easy to get because they have the store right on campus. The other thing I like is that if you want to transfer to a four year college after two years, like me, you can have them help you set that up. I plan to go to Iowa State after two years.

“I like the small classes you can actually get to talk to teachers. Not too big of campus and not too small. It is the perfect size,” said Brandon Martin.

My parents like the idea of going here because I can come home anytime they want me to but I really don’t know if I will come back every weekend. My mom says its nice because it's small.

Choose Your Adventure at Iowa State-Emily Bierl

Selecting a college to attend can be very difficult. It's also even harder when you don't know what field you would like. Many teens change their minds about what fields they like throughout high school.

I have changed my mind from wanting to major in psychology, to wanting to major in design. Researchers say that up to 80 percent of students aren't sure what they want to major in. Up to 50 percent of college students change their majors before graduating. Changing your major actually puts you in the majority of students.

Then there is the choice of what field of design I want to be in. It feels like there are so many choices, in so little time. My senior year flew by and is almost over. I plan to attend Iowa State University next year. I'm undecided on what field of design I want to be in, but I will just take the main design classes my first year. It's hard to believe that I will be leaving home in a few months and living on my own. Many college students change their minds on their major after their first year of school. So, I'll see how my first year goes and plan from there.

I have been on one campus visit to Iowa State and I loved it. Iowa State is located in Ames and it's a really nice city. I'm definately going to have to adjust living in a dorm at Iowa State. I'm very excited to meet my roommate. I won't find out who it will be or where my room will be until June.

There are many things I'm looking forward to about school and also many things I'm nervous about. I'm excited to meet new people and make lots of friends. I'm also looking forward to going to Iowa State games and gaining knowledge to get a job in the future that I will enjoy. I'm a little nervous to be living on my own and not knowing what to expect for my classes. I'm sure all incoming freshman feel this way too, but hopefully I'll adjust.

I'm going to really miss going to Harlan's schools and all the people there. It's time to move forward with life and pursue my dreams. I hope that I can achieve success in everything I do in the future. Moving on will be scary but also fun.

Space Shuttle Retirement

Hey, its Austin. Today I would like to tell you about the space shuttle retiring. I think its wrong because of we will have to depend on the Russians for space transport. But while we were the dominant space power for many years, we are starting to fall behind. I don't want to see us get behind in the space powers because we it would be a blow to our self image. I think until we get a new launch vehicle, we should keep the shuttle for its purposes. But the senators just don't see the in their right mind to keep it around just because its old and still in good condititon.

I have many ideas to combat this. Keep the shuttle until a new launch vehical is made. Or stop cutting programs that are in the phases of development! If the goverment did a smart thing, they would quit cutting the shuttle program and just do a big overhaul of the shuttle or make a replacement to the shuttle thats exactly what the shuttle does; a ferry to and from space, reusable, and is reletivly cheap to launch and recover. The problem with rockets are: 1. aren't reusable, 2. cost a load of money to build and fuel, 3. and they are time consuming to build. With a shuttle, you could fuel and launch them in a matter of months or weeks depending on the situation! And you only need to build a small fleet of them, 4 or 5 will do to complete the situation. But a rocket fleet will require over 100 rockets to be built. And that isnt covering the money required to fuel, maintain over the time required to put on the pad or in the assembly building. Plus a shuttle is durable, yes i know, "What about Challenger and Columbia?" you ask; well they were ACCEDENTS. Horrable accedents, but we learnt from those accedents, Challenger happened in 86, Columbia in 03, but Challenger happend because of a weather related, and Columbia because of a piece of foam that fell from the big orange tank. But a rigorous inspection before lift off happens everyday the shuttle is on the launch pad.

So in conclusion, it would be illogical to retire the shuttle, just because its old. I also believe in a new launch vehical just like the shuttle also.
