Conversing with Mrs. Connell

We interviewed Mrs. Connell about the upcoming softball season and what her expectations of the season were. There will be a new coaching staff for the HCHS softball team and there will also be no seniors on the team.

We asked three softball girls what they were looking forward to this summer and this is how they answered:
•Brooke Schaben- I am looking forward to seeing how the team does without any seniors and I am excited for the new staff.
•Alex Schmidt- I’m ready for dominating the season and winning state! :)
•Chelsea Cave- I am looking forward to playing with a lot of new people and hopefully going to state.

We wish the girls the best of luck on the new season and hope to see everyone sitting in the stands cheering them on! Good luck Mrs. Connell and staff and the 2008 girls softball team!

I interviewed Ms. Connell about how they did at softball this past year. They got third at state last summer which is a good thing. Ms. Connell is going to have been a coach for four years.I learned many things about Ms. Connell and about her love for softball.

HCHS 2006-2007 Baseball Wrapup (Click to view stats)

The two videos above are with Steve Daeges, HCHS Head Baseball Coach, and Brett Stein, 2nd Basemen. The team was 27-9 this past season, and they were 2nd in the Hawkeye Ten Standings, following Carroll Kuemper. They recieved a district match with Creston, after deafeting them they played Glennwood. The win over Glennwodd allowed Harlan to claim the crown of District Champions. The Cyclones advanced to Sub-State, they faced Clarinday at Clarinda. It was a very close game the whole time, but in the end a two run home run in the third inning was the difference. The final score was 3-2.

Pee Wees Baseball Begins!

Hi, this is Christine Wingert with HCHS News. I’m here today to tell you about pee wees baseball. Every summer kids are called to ask if they want to play baseball. Most say us because it’s fun in the sun. Cheezy?? Good. Anyways, I had the chance to interview Zachary Wingert about his experiences playing pee wees baseball for Westphalia. Zach says he enjoys baseball and that it’s his favorite sport. He makes a lot of friends and has a lot of friends that play with him.

Here is his interview :

Question : What position do you play and what do you like a about it?

Zach’s Answer: I play catcher. I really like it a lot because there is always a lot of action and it really keeps you into the game because you have to know everything that is going and pay close attention.

Question: Is baseball one of your favorite summer sports?

Zach’s Answer: Yes, because I won’t be lazy and so I can show my competitive side of me on the field.

Question: What are you reactions after loosing a game? Winning a game?

Zach’s Answer: Loosing, I’m upset and I wonder if the team and I are good players. Winning, I cheer and brag it to my siblings because I feel proud of myself knowing that I helped out the teams win.

Question: What are your favorite things about baseball?

Zach’s Answer: My top three favorite things are hitting the ball, scoring runs, and getting someone out.

so megan…you played harlan softball last year?

MEGAN says:

yep. and i was pretty excited about it.

what position did you play?

MEGAN says:

i pitched mostly.

what did you like most about harlan softball?

umm…

well i’ve just always liked softball and we were playing freshmen so it was almost like highschool .. idk if thats makes any sense. haha

megs… says:

what did you hate about softball the most?

MEGAN says:

well that bad thing about playing freshmen is we all had to take it alot more serious and just kinda ruined the fun

are you going out for harlan softball this year?

MEGAN says:

no i am not.

are you going to play any softball this summer?

MEGAN says:

oh yeah. i wouldnt be able to quit softball altogether. i like it too much. i’m playing CYO softball for panama

and what are your thoughts about playing CYO softball this summer?

MEGAN says:

i am really excited since all my friends are on the team and we dont have to be all serious about it.

megs… says:

do you think you would ever want to go out for harlan softball again?

MEGAN says:

well it depends how CYO softball goes. i probably wont.

what are you hopes for the harlan softball team this year?

MEGAN says:

i hope they make it to state again. and have a great season

Inside Westphalia Boars Practice

Today, I got to be one of the few people to see couple of times a year the practice of the Westphalia Boars Baseball team. The Westphalia Boars won American Legion last year for Cub A. That shows you what kind of tradition this baseball team has.It was a windy sunny day when I got an exclusive interview with the coach/player( you don’t see that very often) Daniel Schaben and Eric Crall. 6 months before the season starts. Elite baseball players come from around the world to try out for the team. They go through training for 3 weeks. The weak are seeded out and only the strong will survive. Somehow this year, kids were chosen around the county. The others had to pack their bags and fly back home.

During the practice, I got to see all the fundamentals that they go through. Even though they had two players today, the other players were off winning other awards. So far, they haven’t had any games because everyone has ran home crying after they have heard the Westphalia Boars crys and see their farmer tans.

Reliever Is Forever Lost Is St. Louis

St. Louis is struck by grief for the second time in five years. One of their talented relief pitchers from last years World Series winning team died Sunday morning. Josh Hancock, he died when his SUV came and rammed into the back of a tow truck. For many Cardinal fans, players, and coaches this brought back painful memories of Darryl Kile’s death back in June of 2002.

“There’s a big hole that’s going to be there,” St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said. “This is brutal to go through.”Due to this tragic event the Cardinals home game against the Cubs tonight was postponed. La Russa took it upoin himself to inform Hancock’s family of the accident.

The police said the 29-year-old Hancock was alone in his Ford Explorer 07′ when the SUV hit the back of a flatbed tow truck at the time of 12:35 a.m. The tow truck was in the left lane with its lights flashing while helping another car that had crashed earlier in the night.

The police also stated that Hancock died on impact when he struck the flatbed tow truck. The Cardinal team will honor their fellow player by wearing patches with Hancock’s #32 on them. Also in the bull pen they plan to set a memorial to him as they did with Kile.

Young Talent

We all know the stragity and talent level of today’s highschool softball teams, but what about the young talent on it’s way up? With the team starging up the fourth Grade softball team is meeting every Friday and Tuesday of April to work on their skills to prepare them for highschool. There is a grand total of 11 girls, each one striving to become better players, and though some may drop out, many of these will become our future team. When May rolls about this team, one of four, will be playing softball games every Tuesday and Friday against the other teams. I think we need to take a look at our younger teams along with our highschool teams, because there is definitly talent there that will grow with each passing year.

The Harlan Cyclones boys are firing up for baseball season! They are hoping to do better than last year, and win Hawkeye 10 again this year! I got the chance to interview Coach Daeges and two seniors: Neil Gross (pitcher) and Brad Blum (short stop). The guys are looking forward to fun and memorable times this year in baseball.
