Plans for the Future / by Dylan Garrison

Iowa Western Community College is a very popular college. It has been known for many years and it is still growing in population. I chose IWCC because it is very close to my home and it was also a lot cheaper than most colleges. If I would miss a class or want to take one while I am in Harlan I can do that as well. Just have to go down to the Iowa Western building on Highway 59.

Most colleges you have to pay extra for meal plans and not have a choice. Well IWCC has a choice you can both live in the suites and have to pay for a meal plan or the option of living in the apartments. Since there is a kitchen you don’t need to pay for a meal plan. You also have the option too if you would like so that is very handy. I can just go over to the lunch room anytime if I don’t have any food. The lunch over there is only four dollars.

I think they also have a lot of good programs. There is a really good band and choir program down there for the kids who are interested in that. Even 89.7 the River radio station broadcasts in the building. They have a big campus so lots of room for students. The book fees are very cheap for the classes that I am taking too and they are really easy to get because they have the store right on campus. The other thing I like is that if you want to transfer to a four year college after two years, like me, you can have them help you set that up. I plan to go to Iowa State after two years.

“I like the small classes you can actually get to talk to teachers. Not too big of campus and not too small. It is the perfect size,” said Brandon Martin.

My parents like the idea of going here because I can come home anytime they want me to but I really don’t know if I will come back every weekend. My mom says its nice because it's small.

One Visit To Your Future

Planning your future is something that we all eventually have to do. We need to decide so many different things in such a short amount of time. Being a junior in high school I am personally making my first step towards my future. I am trying to decide what college would be best for me to attend. There’re so many different colleges around the world and each one with a unique aspect to it, the one thing that makes a college the college for you.

After you get done figuring out what college that you want to visit it is important to make your appointment to visit. Picking a time and date is the one of the easier parts of planning it out. Preparing your self mentally for the visit however is a different story. Yes, it is true you can go to the visit in your hoodie and sweats and just cruise through every aspect of the visit, but while you are there don’t you want to be the person who they remember?

I am going to assume that you do want to be. So we will start with the basics. Before your visit you should know about the school. Get a feel for what the student life is like, what they value most (sports, academics, etc.), are they a party school or a private school, and other things along those lines. When you talk to your friends about your school you are going to hear rumors. Things such as “that school is in a bad neighborhood.” All of these things you will be able to find out at the visit. Keep them in mind and don’t be afraid to ask your tour guide about these things.

When you arrive you should be dressed fairly nice. You want to show them that you care about this school and you take it seriously. Present your self as a strong and confident adult. Ask the questions you have and don’t be scared to look around after your tour is over. Go around and talk to students, eat a lunch there, maybe even consider going into the admissions office and talk to them about financial issues or strengths.

Now every college is going to make them selves appear as your dream school. They want you to pick there school. It is important that you don’t get caught up on the fancy brochures and free stuff they give you. Keep looking at schools until you find the one school that fits every aspect of a school you are looking for. In short term find your perfect match.

This has been Kelsey McDaniel for school news talking to you about college visits. Your future is in your hands. Take your time, do your research and you will find the right school. When you do go on the visit and take it seriously. You do want to be the student they remember don’t you?

Picking a college, Fun or not? - By Jake

For some people this may be really easy but, for others it can be really stressful. Picking a college takes time for some people that don’t really know what they want to do. For some people it can be really easy, for an example, Matt Hoch is going to play football for The University of Iowa, So I guess if you are really good at sports its easier for you then some people. Others might have really bright minds and have done good on the ACT’s, that will really help you on your college selection.
The first step I took was to talk to Mr. Angel in the guidance office. I told him what I was all interested in doing for a career. He gave me a bunch of options for many different colleges to fit my career needs.
After I got it all narrowed down to what I was looking for I came up with a community college called Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mr. Angel set up a college visit for me so, I could get a good look at the campus and see if it was for me.
I went to the visit with a friend to make it easier. We got up the and every one was really nice. The campus was nice all so. It is all up to date with new buildings, apartments, and much much more. We got a one on one tour with the directors of or fields. I went up their to look at the Turf-Management program they had to offer. It requires a lot of hands on work in the outdoors. He told me that I would learn how to maintain the grounds of golf courses, parks, recreation areas, and even get to work at the campus maintaining it too. They told me they would help find me a find an internship in the spring and summer. I learned a lot from the college visit and am thinking about going to Kirkwood next Fall.
So if you want to visit some colleges, talk to Mr. Angel he will put you on the right track to finding the best college that fits your wants and career needs. There are about 4,146 colleges in the U.S. alone in sure he can find the right one for you!

-Jesse Petersen said, ‘I had a lot of fun going to the Kirkwood college visit that Mr. Angel had set up for me.’ ‘My favorite part was going up the night before and staying in the apartments for the real feel of college life.’

Iowa State Cyclones Fall to 1-3 After Loss at Toledo

Reporting as your Iowa State news affiliate, I'm Willy Henrich. The Iowa State Cyclones fall to Toledo 36-35 in a game that ISU just gave up big plays when they needed to not give up big plays. A kickoff return for a touchdown and a botched snap on a punt that ended up in a Toledo touchdown was the turning points in the game, and essentially won the game for Toledo. ISU led 35- 24 until 5:25 in the 4th when things went downhill for the Cyclones. Then ISU drove down the field to the 21 of Toledo, and attempted a field goal with 14 seconds left which was partially blocked by Toledo.

So what is next for the Cyclones? "We will have to regroup after this tough loss, and figure out what we have to do to prepare ourselves for the next game," Losing is always tough, but hopefully our resiliency will come through for us next week against a tough opponent like Nebraska," said Head Coach Gene Chizik. "We have to be ready," said ISU Quarterback Brett Meyer. "We had some really good moments tonight where our offense was in sync, but when you give up big plays on special teams and can't make big plays on special teams then it's tough to win games," said Chizik. But now I'm going to leave you to wonder which ISU team will show up next Saturday: the Good or the Ugly. This is Willy Henrich reporting for HCHS News, and your ISU affiliate wishing you a good day.

Medical Cheese

This is Sara2 and Amber2 for HCHS News. You’re probably wondering what medical cheese is. Well, in our interview with Steve Myers, he will explain what it is. Steve is a foreman for Kiewit Construction out of Omaha. Currently, Kiewit is constructing a new building for UNMC (University of Nebraska Medical Center). Let’s learn about medical cheese...

This album is powered by BubbleShare - Add to my blog

And here's what Steve has to say about this...

Q: Steve, what exactly is medical cheese?
Myers: Well cheese is what we call the building we are constructing because the acronym, CHSE, looks like cheese.

Q: When did Kiewit begin the construction of CHSE or The Center for Health Science Education?
Myers: We started building it in May of ’06.

Q: When will this project be finished?
Myers: August of ‘08

Q: What will the building be used for?
Myers: It is a part of the university that will hold classes for medical students.

Q: Who is in charge of the construction?
Myers: Adam Bealle. He is the superintendent of Kiewit.

Q: How many people are involved in the construction of the building all together?
Myers: 100-150

Q: Where is it located?
Myers: It is on 42nd and Emile Street in Omaha.

Q: How big is the building going to be?
Myers: About ¾ of a city block.

Q: How much does this new building cost?
Myers: Somewhere around 80 million dollars.

Q: How many people are involved in the construction of the building all together?
Myers: 100-150

Q: How are you involved in the construction of the building?
Myers: I build the main structural walls and columns that hold up the building.

As you can see, medical cheese isn’t some strange new health craze. It’s simply the newest building for UNMC. CHSE is still a work in progress but in the end, will be very beneficial to the students of UNMC. This is Amber2 and Sara2 signing off for HCHS news.

VEISHEA 2007 - “A Timeless Tradition”

Every year in April Iowa State students, fans, alumni, and community members celebrate Iowa State’s birthday also known as VEISHEA. This year (April 16-22) Iowa State clebrated its 150th birthday. At this celebration, there are many activities that individuals of any age can participate in. These activities include the parade, tournaments of all sorts, tour de Veishea, Cyclone idol, entertainers, and many others. What does VEISHEA mean? VEISHEA cannot be found in the dictionary but it has a definition that is complete, powerful, and impressive. It is the largest student run festival in the nation bringing in tens of thousands of visitors to the campus each year. The name VEISHEA is actually an acronym for the colleges that were founded in 1922. The acronym is:

<>Veterinary Medicine

<>Engineering

<>Industrial Science

<>Home Economics

<>Agriculture

Just like any other typical big party Veisha has had some problems in the past. Several deaths, injuries, and riots have broken out often due to drinking and violence, but Iowa State has tried to make it safer in the past by enforcing more police on the campus and by making it an alcohol-free event in 1998. Nontheless, Veisha has matured without losing any of its glamour. It has grown into a showcase of excellence. It has many traditions which it has kept throughout the many years. These traditions include the parade (which draws about 75,000 people), the Veishea queen, canoe races, cherry pies, horse show, and Veishea village (open houses for each college).

The slide above contains pictures of the 2007 Veisha parade.

Attention College Students!! Get Your Free/Legal Music Dowloads Here!!!

ruckas

For any college student that has an email ending in .edu, do I have some good news for you. There is now a free music download service just for you! And it’s legal to boot!! No more breaking copyright laws!

Go here to check it out: http://www.ruckusnetwork.com/

Here is how Ruckas explains their service:

“The major record labels would like to combat piracy on college campuses via peer-to-peer networks. Ruckus Network has been authorized by major record labels to offer a catalog of nearly 2.5 million tracks for free to anyone with a dot-edu email address.”

Sounds great to me. It does require you to sign up which is a small price to pay. Now they have to give it to people with the “.k12.ia.us” email address and I’ll be happy.
