Plans for the Future / by Dylan Garrison

Iowa Western Community College is a very popular college. It has been known for many years and it is still growing in population. I chose IWCC because it is very close to my home and it was also a lot cheaper than most colleges. If I would miss a class or want to take one while I am in Harlan I can do that as well. Just have to go down to the Iowa Western building on Highway 59.

Most colleges you have to pay extra for meal plans and not have a choice. Well IWCC has a choice you can both live in the suites and have to pay for a meal plan or the option of living in the apartments. Since there is a kitchen you don’t need to pay for a meal plan. You also have the option too if you would like so that is very handy. I can just go over to the lunch room anytime if I don’t have any food. The lunch over there is only four dollars.

I think they also have a lot of good programs. There is a really good band and choir program down there for the kids who are interested in that. Even 89.7 the River radio station broadcasts in the building. They have a big campus so lots of room for students. The book fees are very cheap for the classes that I am taking too and they are really easy to get because they have the store right on campus. The other thing I like is that if you want to transfer to a four year college after two years, like me, you can have them help you set that up. I plan to go to Iowa State after two years.

“I like the small classes you can actually get to talk to teachers. Not too big of campus and not too small. It is the perfect size,” said Brandon Martin.

My parents like the idea of going here because I can come home anytime they want me to but I really don’t know if I will come back every weekend. My mom says its nice because it's small.

Choose Your Adventure at Iowa State-Emily Bierl

Selecting a college to attend can be very difficult. It's also even harder when you don't know what field you would like. Many teens change their minds about what fields they like throughout high school.

I have changed my mind from wanting to major in psychology, to wanting to major in design. Researchers say that up to 80 percent of students aren't sure what they want to major in. Up to 50 percent of college students change their majors before graduating. Changing your major actually puts you in the majority of students.

Then there is the choice of what field of design I want to be in. It feels like there are so many choices, in so little time. My senior year flew by and is almost over. I plan to attend Iowa State University next year. I'm undecided on what field of design I want to be in, but I will just take the main design classes my first year. It's hard to believe that I will be leaving home in a few months and living on my own. Many college students change their minds on their major after their first year of school. So, I'll see how my first year goes and plan from there.

I have been on one campus visit to Iowa State and I loved it. Iowa State is located in Ames and it's a really nice city. I'm definately going to have to adjust living in a dorm at Iowa State. I'm very excited to meet my roommate. I won't find out who it will be or where my room will be until June.

There are many things I'm looking forward to about school and also many things I'm nervous about. I'm excited to meet new people and make lots of friends. I'm also looking forward to going to Iowa State games and gaining knowledge to get a job in the future that I will enjoy. I'm a little nervous to be living on my own and not knowing what to expect for my classes. I'm sure all incoming freshman feel this way too, but hopefully I'll adjust.

I'm going to really miss going to Harlan's schools and all the people there. It's time to move forward with life and pursue my dreams. I hope that I can achieve success in everything I do in the future. Moving on will be scary but also fun.

Getting Ready For The Big Day by Dylan Garrison

I know a lot of guys and maybe some girls don't care at all about planning their graduation parties. There are a lot more details that go into it that some may think. There are many different options for food and snacks. You could have cupcakes, cake, or any other random deserts. These choices are critical to getting a graduation party ready. The main dish is the biggest question. Catering or making your own food?

"Should we have French dips, pork, tacos, or steak?" my mom always asks.

As you probably already know I am leaving all this stuff up to my mom. I could really care less what I have for food. Its not like i will eat any of it anyway.

"A lot of the parents already have some experience with this kind of stuff but some wouldn't(like my mom)" said Julie Stein.

The other necessiteis are pretty important as well. These include sending invitations, photos, awards, and table settings. Sending invitations might be the most important detail. My mom has been writing out the addresses this week, but she really doesnt know how many to do or who to send them all too. A lot of kids will just have invitations on facebook. For pictures a lot of people will do slideshows. The others include photo albums collages or just have photos sitting out on the tables. Some people might do all of them. I think that will be the most time consuming. My mom just recently got little graduation hats to go on the table.

Those who are not having their graduation party at their house usually have to call and save a place somewhere else. I am having my graduation party at the Elm Crest Community Center. My mom had to call up and reserve it for May 16th.

I think i hit all of the big preparations that go into the whole set up for the graduation parties. So hopefully everyone makes it through all of this and they have a good time in doing it.

Come Sail Away With Me-Emily Bierl

What do you think about Harlan's prom? Does it make you feel like your money was well spent? Is ours better than other schools? I'm going to get the inside scoop on what our students think.

First we start the night with The Grand March. The Grand March is where everyone who is attending the prom is announced to the Harlan community. Dylan Garrison said, " I think it's a good thing to have, so everyone will get noticed." The students each go on stage with their dates, get recognized, and pause for pictures. Some of the couples like to get creative by doing either a hand shake or a dance while on stage. In my opinion, it's a great thing to have so that our familys can see us before we leave for the dance.

Nate Pattee and I being announced at The Grand March. (Not very visible due to the darkness in the auditorium)

From there, we head to the Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha for the dance. Some schools don't even leave their own town for their prom, so we have a good deal. When we arrive there, we get in line to have our picture taken. The pictures turn out really nice, due to all the flowers in the background. After having our pictures taken, we get to enjoy an awesome meal. The meal consists of chicken, roast beef, potatoes, fruit, and best of all, cheesecake! Once our stomachs are full of food we get to watch our fellow classmates be hypnotized. This is probably my favorite part of the night because it is so funny to watch! After that is the dance.

Finally, we head back to Harlan after all of the fun. But, it's not over yet! The schools offers a Casino Night at the high school. You get a chance to win some great prizes. I like casino night, but it felt like a really long activity. Some students didn't really enjoy it but others did. Nate Pattee said, " I liked how you had the chance to get some cool stuff, but it seemed to run a little long. I think I would like it better if it was around an hour instead of two." I think it is cool how so many people donate money for us to have Casino Night. They serve us sandwiches and pizza too.

So, overall I think our prom is pretty awesome. Hanna Bissen explains, "I love being able to dress up nice and have fun with my friends. The whole night is just amazing." We get to go to Omaha and even ride in nice coach buses. I heard that some schools have to ride in their school buses and that doesn't sound fun at all. We get good food and great entertainment. We are really fortunate to have a prom as nice as we do.

Back Parking Lot Dangerous or Not?-By Emily Bierl

Everyone knows how most teens can be with driving safely. There are more distractions and they have a hard time staying focused. In my opinion, most distractions occur with friends in the car and especially at school.

I have witnessed a couple of accidents in the back parking lot of the highschool. The first accident dealt with another person and me. It was very surprising and scary. Another accident that occured, was between my friend and another lady. The lady was going pretty fast and so was my friend. Before my friend knew it, she came around a corner and the lady ran right into her. I asked Danielle how much it will cost to fix the damage and she answered, "Probably over one thousand dollars. I got a new car recently and my sister is now getting the damaged one." I also asked her what she wishes she would of done to prevent the accident and she stated, "I wish I would of payed more attention and slowed down. I hope in the future the school will put a yield sign or something up to prevent these things from happening." An anonymous teacher exclaimed, " It's hard to find a safe parking spot to park in without worrying about it."

-Danielle Hansen's car after the wreck.

In my opinion there are many ways we can prevent these wrecks from happening. We could all stand to drive a little slower when in the parking lot. We could also try and keep the music down, so we can focus on our surroundings. Another way would be to put your phone away and not text while driving. I'm not sure if it would help, but maybe the school should think about putting some signs up in the parking lot.

I think that if enough wrecks occur in the parking lot, the school should definately think about ways to stop it. We either need to be more cautious or have some signs and rules. Would you want to take the risk and hurt your car or even yourself?

Snow!!! by Jake Holloway

Snow is pretty much a love-hate relationship. Some people love it and others hate it with a passion.

The Good-
The goods about snow is that you can do so many thing in it. The best reason I like the snow is that school can be called of and who dosen’t like a snow day? You can go sledding and snow boarding down monster hills. Some people like to go to Mt. Cresent because they have nice hills and it’s really easy to get back up the hills with the ski lift. You can go drift busting with trucks but, make sure you always have two trucks because you never know when you might need a little help in getting out of the drift. Some people love the snow to go snowmobiling, you can only go once a year so the more snow for them the better. Kids love to go out in the snow to have snowball fights and to make a classic holiday snowman. The hunters like the snow because it helps them to spot the deer so they can hunt them easier. I would fall under the people that love snow, I like to do all of these things when winter comes around. I always like to have a white Christmas as well, it just adds to the holiday spirit.

The Bad-
The not so good about the snow is that it is really cold! Old people hate the snow and cold so much that they have second houses down south so they don’t have to deal with it. It is really hard to get around if you don’t have four-wheel-drive too. You have to wait around behind city trucks that move the snow and they take for ever. Many accidents happen during the winter caused by the snow. Its not fun going out to start your car a little earlier just so you can melt the ice off of you windows.

Dylan Garrison- “I hate waking up to scrape my windows off in the morning! It drives me crazy!”

Jeremy Schwery- “I love busting drifts with my GMC, it never gets stuck!”
