It was Easter Eve, April 7th, when a herd of tired distance runners piled into a suburban at seven in the morning to begin their journey to the Missouri River Runners’ annual Spring Thaw fun run in Sioux City. Participants received a special t-shirt, lovely paperclip holder, square keychain, nifty miniature flashlight, and the opportunity to run all for only $17.00. Jacquilyn Erickson, Katie Kroger, Lexie Hoffmann, Jenny Hosack, Ranae Schnack, and Jill Reuschenberg ran the 5K course while Mr. Renkly (who is, by the way, training for a marathon) and his pal John Vorrath battled through the ten-mile run. A short but great interview with Mr. Vorrath is as follows:
Interviewee: John, have you ever ran ten miles before at one time?
John: No.
Remarkably, through hard work and determination, John WON his age division (19 & under) with a time of 80 minutes and received a hefty medal to wear around his neck! Although suffering from slight hypothermia, Mr. Vorrath’s smile still stretched wide. John was not the only winner of the day. Jenny Hosack remarkably struck luck in the door prizes and won herself a $25 gift certificate to La Fiesta, a Mexican restaurant in Sioux City. The runners later spent it all on a nice taco dinner. Although the temperature outside was arctic and the wind was enough to move mountains, the day was well spent. The suburban traveled home to Harlan safely and happily with only one regret on their minds: John should have run cross-country.
