Winter Snow Removal at HCMS and HCHS

I had an interview with Terry Schulte, the Head Custodian of the High School and the Middle School on snow removal. The custodians are in charge of all snow removal when it snows. They apply salt, scoop, clear the parking lots and driveways. The city helps clear the driveways and the parkings lots if it snows or ices excessively. Part of good snow removal is being prepared before the storm hits. They use the weather channels and the radio to find out when the winter storms will hit are area. After they figure out that the storm is coming, they all do there part of the jobs like pre-salting side walks and parking lots and preparing equipment. They will be at the schools hours before students and staff get there. The custodians are usually busy with snow and ice removal for at least a full school day or longer after it snows. They always have to report to work unless it is impossible for them to get to work or unless Mr. Magee calls them to notify them not to report to school. When school is cancelled or delayed, they still have to report to work so that the parking lots and the side walks are clear when school resumes. He and the other custodians use the school's tractor and blower to remove snow and ice. It was amazing how much really goes into keeping the sidewalks and parking lots clear and safe for students, staff, and visitors at Harlan Community Schools. Thanks for all of the hard work guys!
