Winter Weather Hits

This is Evans2 for HCHS News. This week a major snow storm came through the Midwest. Although areas north of Omaha were unaffected by the ice storm, places south of Omaha including Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri were hit heavily by the storm. There was ice all over the trees in all the areas, causing branches to fall on to roads and on to people’s cars. Ice on the power lines also caused people to lose power. Downed power lines caused several house fires in Oklahoma. Approximately 618,000 people were without power in Oklahoma. In addition, in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Nebraska there are 208,000 people without power. In Oklahoma, officials said it could take a week to restore power.
Also, there were several deaths involved with the storm. Across the Midwest, eighteen people died because of the storm. Clean up has begun in all of the areas hit by the storm. Many schools in the Omaha metro area were closed because of the storm and many in western Iowa as well. Many of the major roads have been cleaned up; however, some roads in the surrounding countryside and neighborhoods are still covered in snow and ice. This is Evans2 for HCHS News signing off.
