The Master Matrix is a scoring system that can be used to evaluate the sitting of permenant hog confinements or other factory farms. Many counties in the state of Iowa have adopted the Master Matrix with the hopes of reducing the complaints by landowners living nearby. Recently, Shelby county has adopted the Master Matrix. Many complaints, and even lawsuits, have been filed in recent years due to the unsanitary conditions associated with factory farms. Ultimately, it is not the county that decides where these confinements are placed, but the Department of Natural Resources. In my opinion, I think that it's good that there is this law because I, for one, live by a hog confinement that was placed nearby after we moved to our acreage, and it's smell is really bad. The farmer was asked to not place this there, with our family concerned with these problems. The farmer did not seem to care for our concerns and we are left with dealing with this situation and it is not a great place to be.
