Harlan

Early existence shows that trappers and hunters made frequent stops into Shelby County before Iowa was even a state in 1846. Two men know as Bowman and Berry, members of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, came to settle the lands. Shelby County was formed in 1853 because of government issues. The town of Harlan was established in 1858 and no one really knows if it was named after him or not. James Harlan represented Iowa in the Senate. Harlan got to know President Lincoln political and personal. President Lincoln appointed James Harlan the Secretary of the Interior in March of 1865. One month later, Lincoln was assassinated. James Harlan died on October 5, 1898. He was named one of two “sons of Iowa” and statue stands at the nation’s capitol.

The courthouse was made in 1892 with Indiana limestone. The new courthouse replaces two frame building that one stood on James Harlan’s house.

The town of Harlan today is known for many things. Sports, Academics, Music, and the Community. One is the 11 State Championships we have won in Football. There are many more opportunities then sports and thats what is so great about Harlan.
