Cyclones Boy's Tennis Lose Close One to Shenandoah

The Harlan Community boy’s tennis team traveled to Shenandoah on Thursday, April 19 and lost 4-5 to go to 3-3 on the year.

For the the second year in a row, the meet ended at 5-4 but this year it was Shenandoah coming out on top. “I knew going in that this meet would be super close and it couldn’t have gotten any closer,” Coach Chad Bruns said. “Seven of the nine matches were won/lost by four games or less with four of those being by two games. It was incredibly close. We had our opportunities but they were just a bit more consistent down the stretch. I’m still very proud of the guys for battling hard.”

As far as wins for the Cyclones, #1 Brock Bruns had his most impressive win on the season over Jacob Buzzard while #6 Lucas Schmitz dug deep to win 10-8 over Nick Bartles. “Brock was down early 0-4 and was struggling mentally but eventually got his confidence back and won ten of the next twelve games. A great win for him against a good player. “I was also very happy to see Lucas fight in his back and forth match. It was a big win for him,” Bruns said.

The Cyclones won two out the three doubles matches, winning at #2 and #3. “We had been struggling in doubles in the early part of the season but we have worked on it in practice and have really improved this last week or so. It was great to see Jonny, Kaleb, Lucas and Mitchell play well and get wins today,” Bruns added.

The Cyclones host Atlantic, Clarinda and Carroll Kuemper next week on Monday, Thursday and Friday.
