80th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference

BubbleShare: Share photos - Powered by BubbleShare

Ames was the home of the 80th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference April 14 and 15. The conference was full of activities. Monday was the day for Career Development events. These events were teams competeing against each other for the chance to move on to nationals. In order for these teams to make it to the state level they had to move from sub-districts to districts and from districts to state. The last level is nationals which will take place next october in Indianapolis. Our teams did very well. Our Conducts of Meetings team placed a silver rating. Our 8th Grade CSI team recieved a gold rating and placed second. The Ag Issues team from Harlan recieved a gold rating and placed fourth. The Harlan Chapter recieved an award for top raffle ticket selling chapter in Iowa. The day also held a career fair and other various activites such as FFA Idol. They also had a T-shirt Gun at the General Sessions. Monday was a long day, but Tuesday was almost as busy. The career fair was also held Tuesday along with workshops, general sessions, and a movie. The conference ended with the fourth general session. The FFA Band and FFA Choir preformed at this. The Iowa FFA Degrees were awarded to conclude the general session. The state conference is a lot of fun for all FFA members. All chapters from around Iowa come to compete and have a good time. This is always an opportunity to meet new friends. I encourage many to join Ag and FFA.

Q & A with FFA

Hello and this Lucas havick telling you that this year in FFA, is going to be really super cool. If you don’t know anything about FFA here is something about it. FFA is an organization about agriculture and how people can do there part to get involved with it. Also if you are wondering well what do you really do in FFA. We sat down with FFA Members Mitch Anderson and David Siebert.

Lucas: so a mitch I was wondering what sort of event are really going to happen this year in FFA.

Mitch: Well in a few couple of weeks we will be heading to the trapshoot just as we do every year. Also we will be having the FFA banquet which usually has great entrtainment.

Lucas: What do you have to do have to do to go on this canada trip I hear about.

Mitch: You have to get points by participating in FFA events 3000 points are needed.

Lucas: In the FFA chapter who are the leaders and what is your take on them.

Mitch: The leaders are Mr. lienen and Mrs. Elemquest and they are good leaders and everyone really respects them.

Lucas: What sort of things go on at the meetings.

Mitch: in the meetings we talk about ag related subjects and the upcoming events.

Lucas:David Siebert Why would somone want to be in FFA.

David: If you really enjoy outdoors events you'll love FFA and you get to have lots of fun with all the other members.

Lucas: Do you have to be a farmer to be in FFA

David: no, because i have very little exprense on a Farm and i enjoy the great program.

Lucas: Are there any requirments to be in FFA.

David: yes, you have to be in an Agricultutre class and have to be able to memerise the FFA creed.

Lucas: What is it like being a new FFA member.

David: there is alot of challenges and the older members sometime rip on me.

Lucas: so FFA is going to be a great program this year.

David: Yes, the progam is going to be strong and its going to really fun with all the new members.

The FFA State Convention

I, Joe Hahn, interviewed Mr. Leinen on what he thought about the convention.

Q: How do you think we did at state? Why?

A: Well most advisers would be upset, but since we had so many contests we couldn’t concentrate on one at a time. We are 12th in state so we are still good.

Q:What could we improve on?

A: We should really increase the amount of practice we put into our contests.

Q: Would you consider the state convention to be a good turnout this year? Why?

A: Yes, the Harlan FFA broke their record for attendence and statewide we broke the record of 5,000 people.

Q: Was there any problems? Why?

A: No, but maybe the quality of the judges.

Q: What was the funniest moment? Why?

A: Well there was two, one was when i was listening to the secretary of agriculture and i broke the chair (Mr. Leinen did), and the second was when Mrs. Elmquist was playing Halo…..she was having problems getting her character to look up, everyone was telling her to look up, then Tyler Lefeber said she was studying the soil for next year (inside joke).

That right there was the theme to the state convention which had a really annoying song with it.

State FFA Preview

The state FFA is held in Ames, IA and it is on the 15th and 16th of April. The Harlan FFA Chapter is the largest in the state and are taking close to 70 kids to it. Some events are Parli Pro, Experience the Action, Conduct of Meetings, Ag Issues, and more.

FFA Breaks Record-Interview with Mr. Leinen

On Saturday March 10, the Harlan FFA chapter participated at the District FFA contest held at Glenwood. Ben (6th) and Nate (3rd) interviewed Mr. Leinen about how the District competition went and about the future State FFA contest that seventy kids from Harlan will get to participate in.

FFA Breaks Old Record

The Harlan FFA broke an old record of sending members to state for contests. The old record of members sent is around fifty members, give or take. Yet, this year we destroyed the old record by sending an astonishing 70 members to the state convention in Ames. Some of the teams that recieved first place are the Conduct of Meeting team, the Parlimentary Procedure team, and the CSI 8th grade team. Some other teams that did not recieve first place but are going to advance on to state are the Agricultural Issues team, and several of the CSI 8th grade teams. But most diappointing of all is our Creed Speaker, Ben Reinig. He recieved a gold, but did not get to advance on to state. The winner of the creed speaking contest had to perform the creed in front of the members of the southwest district. She was unable to perform it correctly and it was quite obvious the Ben should have one the contest. Considering how well Ben performed, he gets to present the flag at state.

The Conduct of Meetings team presents the opening ceremonies of FFA meetings and demonstrated several different types of motions. Parlimentary Procedure demonstrates a lot more motions than Conducts of Meetings, but is similar. An exclusive interview with some of the winners in the next intallment of FFA recordbreaking.
