5th Grade Girls AAU Volleyball Team Play in Ankeny Tournament

BubbleShare: Share photos - Play some Online Games.

March 1st, the fifth grade girls AAU volleyball team from Harlan placed second in a tournament in Ankeny, Iowa. Coaches Carrie Schaben(for the day Lisa Swanson due to Carrie being on a trip) and Lori Stitz lead a team of nine girls: Megan Euchner, Elle Kloewer, Asia Kloewer, Teresa Arkfeld, Jess Schaben, Kylie Stitz, Mackenzie Swanson, Macy Bartley and Brooke Decker. The tournament consisted of eight teams. Harlan played five teams, each team being played twice in a row. The girls first played Grundy Center White followed by the Ankeny Dominators--then a by for whcih they officiated (line judged, kept score, exc.)--and then the DC-G Fillies. Losing just a single match (2nd match to the Ankeny Dominators), the girls placed second seed in their pool, determining the actual tournament line up. The Harlan girls began by playing Ankeny Showtime and then the Spikers. Each game in the championship was played best two out of three games. Harlan was undefeated for these. The Championship game was between Harlan and the Ankeny Dominators, playing for the second time that day. After two grueling matches Ankeny and Harlan each had one win, Ankeny won by a single point in the third game, giving them first place. Harlan received second overall. After such a long day, the girls were tired and ready to go. Jennifer managed to speak with Elle Kloewer after the finals. Here is their interview.

Jennifer A- How do you, personally, think the team did?
Elle K- Great! We had good day.
JA- How did your team acctually do?
EK- We placed second seed in our pool and got second out of tournament
JA- Which team do you think was the toughest match?
EK- The Ankeny Dominators.
JA- Why were they such a tough team?
EK- They made most of their serves and were really good.
JA- How well did you as an individual do?
EK- Really good.
JA- Does your team participate in many tournaments?
EK- Yes, almost every weekend!
JA- How often does your team practice?
EK- Every wednesday
JA- What is the best part about your team?
EK- We all get along like good teammates.

Road to State Volleyball

We took a big red bus to state volleyball. We road tripped all the way to Cedar Rapids. It was a long ride but a lot of fun. There was about 27 people who road with us. The girls played West Deleware. They played very well but lost in three matches. All in all it was a blast and I think everyone had a great time.

A Day in the Life of A Line Judge

I'm here with line judge extraordinaire Chad Bruns interviewing him on his mad line judging skills.

Q: Why are you a line judge?

Bruns: Well, the long time line judge, Tony Beach, moved out of town and Mitch Osborn asked me to take his spot this year.

Q: Do you like line judging?

Bruns: It's fine, especially when it goes three games(with us winning). It's fun to watch the team play especially when they are playing well.

Q: What's the toughest part of being a line judge?

Bruns: Their is always at least one controversial call every match. Making those calls is the toughest part. We need that slow mo camera like pro tennis matches have now. Standing can also get a bit tiring, especially volunteer standing.

Q: What's the most controversial call you have made this year?

Bruns: On Tuesday, Abby was on the very back line and I called that she hit it. I was the only one that saw it and so I called it. I'm not sure if it was my call to make but it was obvious to me that she hit it.

Q: Are you sure she hit it?

Bruns: I am. The ball went past her and then changed direction. I asked her the next day or so if she had hit it and Abby said she wasn't sure.

Q: So what do you think?

Bruns: She hit it no doubt. I could tell how she looked at me that she hit it. And she never said she didn't hit it.

Q: Can you tell us what's happening in the picture I'm including in the story?

Bruns: May I see it? Oh, yea this was a big point as you can tell by how focused I am. Of course I am always focused.

Q: How do you prepare for line judging?

Bruns: Blood, sweat and tears. Tears I say! No really, I stretch a bit before going on the floor as it is a lot of standing. If I'm feeling crazy, I might down a pop before I come to up the energy level and focus.

Q: What advice do you give to all those fledgling line judges out there?

Bruns: Stay focused on the point, watch the lines and tips very close and when you make a controversial call, call it quick and with confidence!! Don't let the coaches or fans get to you.

Q: Who is your favorite player?

Bruns: That's a loaded question! Anyway, while watching big spikes is really fun, I appreciate the work the setters and passers do. Without them, spikes don't happen. I won't name names. Sorry!

Q: Anything else you would like to say?

Bruns: Yes. I'd like to give a shout out to my partner Mr. John Connell who does an outstanding job calling the lines as well! Go Cyclone Volleyball!!!

Once again, I would like to thank HCHS line judge Chad Bruns for his time and his service.

3rd Degree Girls Finish Second at Regionals

Three Harlan volleyball players compete for a regional title with their 15U Third Degree team. Unfortunately Mary Kaufmann, Danielle Stewart, and Amanda Petersen came home just a little short of the first place trophy. We have an exclusive interview with the libero for the team; Mary Kaufmann.

1. How did you think your team would do going into this tournament?
I knew the teams there would be tough, so I was just hoping that we wouldn’t get get demolished.

2. Was the compatition what you expected it would be?
Not really. I expected girls 6 feet tall, but they seemed to be average teams.

3. What did you feel was the best part of the whole tournament?
Well…during one point, the other teams back-left did an illegal attack in the front row, so I called it for the referee…just in case he didn’t see it.

4. How did you feel going into the last game knowing you could win regionals?
Confident. The team that had beaten us the day before didn’t make it to the campionship, so we thought we had it in the bag.

5. How did you feel after losing?
Dissappointed…we should’ve won it. They didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves.

6. Are you sad the season is over, why or why not>?
No, I’m ready for free weekends again!

7. Do you believe you have improved as the season went on?
I’d like to think so.

8. How many games did you guys play all together?
I don’t know…a million.

9. Do you think we are a better team than the team that ended up beating us in the championship?
I do indeed.
