Dress Me Up, Before Ya Go Go!

It's a Nightmare on Elm Street. In the dreams of his victims, a specteral child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him. But in the hallways of HCHS, a different kind of monster plagues the students and faculty. And that monster is... the glory that is Dress Up Days. For five days the students strut their stuff down the hallways, and the sky is the limit.

For years, anyone and everyone associated with Harlan Community High School have been invited to join in the festivities of Homecoming Week by dressing according to the themed days. Traditionally, Monday has always been Pajama Day and Friday the legendary Red and Black Day. But Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are up in the air. So, I, Danielle Hernandez for School News, have taken on the task of recording the 2010 Homecoming Dress Up Days.

So, Monday rolled around and students rolled right of bed and headed to school. Pajama Day has always been a favorite, for the simple reason that it's easy, comfy, and hard to forget. As previously stated, Monday has always been Pajama Day. So if you forget, I would suggest getting yourself checked out. Best Dressed boy was Mason Fah, who dawned a red onesie, complete with footsies. There was a tie between Alex Hansen and Emily Assmann. And, as predicted, Mrs. DuVal walked away with a five dollar certificate to Cylcone Corner with her ensemble. You go girl!

Tuesday was comparable to a rainbow vomiting on all of the students. Technicolor tights were seen on the ladies below the waist while, unfortunately for many, bare thighs were exposed by the menfolk. This day was definitely a spectacle, as many ladies contributed to Global Warming with their excessive hairspray and gigantic, cheesy scrunchies. But aside from the ecological damage, it was a pretty enjoyable day. Best dressed male went to Alex Markham, who came prepared for tennis at the local country club with exposed white thighs. Best dressed girl was Jandy Johnston, who looked like she walked right out of a Jane Fonda video. Mrs. Lansman earned her title (and her calves for that matter) by jumproping all day long.

Wednesday was a throwback to my freshman year, with Duct Tape/Trash Bag Day making another appearance. Students got creative by designing entire outfits from the supplies easily found at home. A common theme that day was the coveted designer tape, with many patterns and colors being incorporated. David Siebert came to school wearing a trash can, and thus won himself Best Dressed. Chandler Mores was the winner for Best Dressed girl, and Best Dressed teacher was Mrs. Rasmussen.

On Thursday, the theme for those not participating in Powderpuff was Hippie Day. Tye-dye, bell-bottoms, and floral print filled classrooms while the students rocked the peace sign in all their pictures. It was good times to be had by all. Shelbie Jacobson looked postively retro in her dress and boots, and won herself Best Dressed. As did Nick Hadfield, with his torn jeans and laid-back style. Mrs. Rasmussen went back to back with her victories this week, a feat that will not soon be forgotten.

And there you have it, this past week's Homecoming Dress Up Days festivities summed up and accounted for. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. What did you all think of this year's days? Be sure to leave a comment! This has been Danielle Hernandez for School News. You stay classy, HCHS!

Homecoming Dance: Friday or Saturday? -By Alex

As most of you know, the Homecoming dance of the 2009-2010 school year was on Saturday night, rather than Friday night. At Harlan High School, all the Homecoming festivities have always been on Friday. The day would start off with the coronation ceremony at 1:30, followed by the parade around the historic Square of downtown Harlan, and after the parade was completed, there was a small pep assembly on the steps of the Courthouse. At 7:30 that night, the Cyclone harriers would play an enticing game against their opponents, and ever since I can remember, the Cyclones have always won. At about halftime of the football game, the high school girls would scramble off to primp, polish, and scurry to be looking fantastic as their dates arrive. In the mean time, when the game would end, the football boys would rapidly shower, and get all fancied up to go meet their girls and have their pictures taken.

Now you may ask, “What’s the problem with this? It all seems to run so smoothly!” But the problem is that no one arrives at the dance until around 10:00 or 10:30, at the earliest. Now I don’t know about you, but that seems kind of late to me, especially because of the fact that the dance ends at midnight. Because of this, the Harlan High School Student Council took it among themselves to take a vote of the student body and see if students thought we should move the dance to Saturday night, with everything else remaining on Friday. The result of the vote was to have the dance Saturday, so that’s what went down.

The dance was most definitely a success! Everyone I talked to absolutely loved the music and had a BLAST dancing. Even people who don’t like to dance said that they had fun boogying on the dance floor. I didn’t even hear anyone complain about the breathalizing, which was put into effect last year. Student Council benefited from the dance as well, profiting $1645. All in all, everyone had a great night!

Many people had many different opinions on the dance on Saturday. To tell you the truth, I think both Friday and Saturday night have their pros and cons. Among the people I interviewed, one night didn’t seem to rule over the other night; both options seemed pretty even. Below are numerous quotes from different members of the HCHS student body about the dance. The question asked was, “Did you like the dance better on Friday night or Saturday night?” Here were the responses:

Amy Clark, junior, said, “It was alright on Saturday. I liked it better on Saturday because you have more time to get ready and you don’t have to leave in the middle of the game to be ready in time.”

From a guy’s perspective, Jarod Juhl, a sophomore, states, “I liked it better on Friday because everything was done and over with in one night.”

“I liked the dance better on Friday because everything, like coronation and the parade, were all back-to-back rather than spread out,” said sophomore Ali Goetzinger.

As a freshman, Jack Keane didn’t get the experience of the dance on Friday, but he still thought, “It was pretty tight!”

Michael Klein (senior), more commonly known as Drama, said, “I liked it on Saturday because the Oklahoma football game was on the TV in the commons!”

Personally, I liked the dance better on Saturday, but I didn’t mind it on Friday either. I think the reason I liked it on Saturday was because it was different and new. It made Homecoming last the whole weekend rather than just one night, and I liked that because I simply love Homecoming! I would love to hear what you readers think though, so if you have any opinions on this subject, go ahead and leave a comment! :)

Homecoming Coronation/Dylan Garrison

So Homecoming was Friday October 2nd, and we did absolutely nothing in class that day because we got out at 1:30 to go to coronation. All the homecoming kings got ready in like 15 minutes, but the queens took all day doing their hair and what not. At first I didn’t think the coronation was ever going to start because all of the candidates had to wait in the library till it started and it took forever. As we waited we got our pictures taken by many parents.

After we got done with all the flashes, we headed to the auditorium. We patiently waited outside the auditorium until the introduction of the coronation was over with. As our names were called we got introduced with some pictures and personal highlights while being escorted to the stage.

There was a lot of waiting for something that only took about fifteen minutes to get through. Then the King and Queen were announced. It was Nathan Brace and Jenny Hosack.

A lot of people said it wasn’t too short or too long. Many of the people I asked about the coronation thought it was really good; they liked the music and the decorations. I myself thought it was decorated nice and I also wished that the parade wasn’t cancelled. That was really the only thing I was looking forward to was riding in the convertibles. I kinda wished that the dance would have been after the game Friday than on Saturday. There was too much waiting around on Saturday, but I thought the dance was pretty fun.
Overall Homecoming turned out better than I thought it would be.

Homecoming Dance.... Is it all it's said to be?

So the time of the year has come once again. Where girls are waiting expectantly for a guy to surprise them with the question “Will you go to homecoming with me?” Then girls go through stores looking for a perfect dress and guys talk about how they are going to make sure the girls have an awesome night. So everyone really loves homecoming right?
Well I am Kelsey McDaniel with HCHS school news and I am here to pose the question. Does everyone really like the homecoming dance? I have interviewed and researched a variety of students; students from the freshman class up to the senior class.
While I was sitting in class I have been over hearing a lot of conversations about homecoming. It seems that most people are fifty-fifty on the subject. A group of girls were sitting in art class and I was sitting in the middle of the class room. The girls on my right were so excited about the dance. They are in charge of making sure the dance is going to be really great. Most of the girls already have dresses and don’t even have a date yet. The girls on my left were talking about how they think that the homecoming dance is a popularity contest. That it is only fun if you are one of the “popular” girls or guys. They all said that they do not plan on attending the dance this year just because of there opinion on the subject.
The guys have a pretty common opinion on the subject. It’s a lot of pressure to ask the girls, especially if they are not dating. Most don’t like to have to dress up and get there pictures taken.
As most of you know The Homecoming Dance starts usually at about nine o’clock and goes to midnight. People show up and spend about a half hour to an hour getting their pictures taken. After that people usually spend an hour just standing around and talking. Finally people start to dance and have fun. It’s usually close to midnight by the time people really start to have a good time.
So I went straight to the students of HCHS and asked for their personal opinions on the dance. The question asked was “What is your overall opinion on the Homecoming Dance and why do you feel the way do?”

Taimon Wehr (Junior)- It’s lame.

Danielle Hernandez (Junior)- Its lame but I think its better that it is on Saturday instead of on Friday.

Sierra Bain (Senior)- It sucks and it’s boring. It is never really any fun.

Victoria Jensen (Senior)- School dances are worthless but it gives me a chance to hang out with my friends.

Anonymous Junior Girl- Umm I don’t like it cause the themes are usually lame and a live band would be way better than a D.J.

Cora Davis (Junior)- Its a lot of fun and it’s a great way to hang out with friends and not be tempted to drink. Its kind of a lot of hype for something that’s really not that great.

CJ Seaman (Junior)- Definitely not going to go. I don’t like dressing up and I can’t dance.

Shantel Ayers (Freshman) – I am really excited. Its going to be my first and I hear it’s a lot of fun.

Anonymous Senior Boy- I think its dumb 'cause all they play is rap.

Well there you have it HCHS’s opinion on the Homecoming dance. This year’s theme is going to be Lion King and it will be held on October 3rd. Student Council is working really hard to exceed all expectations you may have for this year's dance. So I will end with this question. What’s your over all opinion about the homecoming dance and why do you feel the way you do? Post your comments right here.
