Bruns and Rueschenberg Finish Second at Hawkeye 10

Listen to Coach Bruns' radio report here.

The Harlan Cyclones ended up getting 8th place at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament in Denison on Tuesday, May 4. The highlight for the Cyclones was Brock Bruns and Mitchell Rueschenberg getting second place in the #1 doubles tournament. You can see all the results in the pictures below.

The Cyclones host Kuemper on Friday and Thomas Jefferson on Monday. Districts will be held in Carroll next Wednesday, May 12.

Coach Bruns' comments:

It was great to see Brock and Mitchell have a great day by getting 2nd place. They beat a good Creston team and a very tough Denison team to reach the finals. We were up 5-2 against Denison but before we knew it it was 5-5. We stepped up it up and won three of the last four games. Brock raised his level in the final game, up 7-6, and got all his first serves in which made it much easier for us to close it out.

In the finals, we just struggled to find a way to win games as the Sturm brothers are so good devensively. It forced us to play more agressivley which led to mistakes. I'll give all the credit to Atlantic, they played a great match.

Listen to Coach Bruns' Radio Report here

Comments from Coach Bruns:

I thought Brock played pretty well against Jeff Miller but came up short in games where he had chances to win. Jeff is one of the best players in Western Iowa so it’s never easy against him. Mitchell played very well for the first half of the match and was up 4-3 but his level dipped a little after that and Carter took advantage. Stephen, Tytan and Nolan all played hard and just need to continue working on finishing shots they can make. Andrew was the lone singles winner today. He played very well and is really starting to pick up the strategy of the game. It was great to see him play well and get a win. Andrew and Nolan were the lone winners in doubles and are really starting to play well together.

It was great to see Brock playing confidently today. His groundstrokes, serve and shot variety were great today in his 10-1 win. Great win today!

This was the biggest comeback that any of my players have ever come back from so I just want congratulate Mitchell on never giving up and getting the big win!

HCHS Boy's Tennis Lose Season Opener to Abe Lincoln

Coach Bruns' comments:

Listen to the KNOD Radio Report here.

First of all, it is great to be back on court! After having no season last year, our team and all teams of course, are completely different with Freshemen and Sophomores having never played a tennis season before. Due to this, our team is quite inexperienced but all are willing to work hard to improve and that is exactly what we will strive to do with each meet.

Our only two returning varsity players are four time letterwinners Brock Bruns and Mitchell Rueschenberg. They will lead us this year as our number one and two players. Nolan Blum and Nick Anderson have been on the team previous years but this is their first year playing Varsity. The rest of the team are all first year tennis players including first year Varsity players Stephen Leinen(10th) and Keyton Francis(10th).

We ran into a good team in Abe Lincoln on Tuesday(March 30). They outplayed us at every postition. I thought Mitchell Rueschenberg played a great match. He was up 6-5 but lost the next three games to lose 6-8. It was a great effort and one that can build confidence as we continue on the season. Brock's match against Dalton Pregon seemed much closer than the score indicated. It was close early but Dalton won the big points in the close games and pulled away. Dalton is one of the top players in Soutwest Iowa and has a great shot of making State Tennis in the bigger(2A) schools.

I also want to give a big shout out to the JV team. They won 7-2 which is quite impressive since everyone won at least two matches and this is everone's first year on the team.

AL Varsity won the meet 9-0. The Cyclones are now 0-1 on the season.

Varsity Singles:

#1  Brock Bruns lost 2-8 to Dalton Pregon

#2  Stephen Leinen/Nolan Blum lost 3-8 to C. James/Wailes

#3  Keyton Francis/Nick Andersen lost 4-8 to T. James/Mohr

JV won their meet 7-2 and are now 1-0 on the season.

Coach's Comments:

Another year comes to an end and while we didn't have a great overall season, we still played hard and improved as the season progressed. Brock Bruns and Jonny Cheek Finish Second at the Hawkeye 10 Tennis Tournament, Team 8th

Coach's Comments:

Overall, this was a great day for us. We have struggled in duels this year, not winning a meet as of yet. Our goal was to be in the top eight teams which we achieved by getting 8th place.

The highlight of the day was Brock and Jonny getting second place in the #1 doubles tournament. They played the best they have all season beating a good Red Oak team in the first round and then previously undefeated, #2 seed Clarinda in the semifinal. The win against Clarinda was especially nice as they had lost a tough one to the same team in a tiebreaker just last week. Unfortunately, we ran into an excellent Denison team in the final. They just didn't make many mistakes and put us in tough situations where we had to make some good shots and we just didn't consistently enough. Great effort all day from Brock and Jonny and I know that they still haven't come close to playing their best tennis this year.

I also want to say that Carter Wagner played well today and battled his way to an 8th place finish. In the first round, Carter was up 5-3, 40-15 on the #4 seed from Glenwood and was about ready to take a 6-4 lead. Unfortunately, Carter lost that game and just didn't rebound from it as his opponent won the next five games to win the match.

Mitchell Rueschenberg and Braden Fink also battled to an 8th place finish helping our team get 8th place. Mitchell and Braden played well overall but got themselves into some deep holes they couldn't dig out of.
