So what goes on behind the closed doors of the vocal room...? This is Sara2 and Amber2 and we're here to tell you just that. It's not just looking at music and singing all hour. We find our ways to get off topic and tell stories about
random things, just like in any other class. But this blog is about what we actually accomplish when we're on task. Ms. Thies was kind enough to answer a few of our questions and give you an idea of just how Freshman Girls Choir works...

Q:So, Ms. Thies, how long have you been teaching?
A:Well, this is my tenth year. You can call me old, but I prefer that you don't.
Q:Where did you go to college?
A:Wayne State, Wayne, Nebraska.
Q:What was your major?
A:Music Education(Vocal and Instrumental) grades K-12. Yes, I'm certified to teach band, believe it or not.
Q:So, do you teach piano?
A:I teach piano lab, yes. And I have taught private piano lessons and private guitar classes.
Q:Can you tell us a little about All-State?
A:Oh my gosh, you should know about this Sara.
Sara says: All-State just a bunch of people who try out to be in a concert. This is the most select choir in the state accepting only the top 1.7% of singers. Twelve people from Harlan are trying out on Saturday. Wish them luck!
Q:What else is going on in choir right now?
A:Our big fall concert is tomorrow, grades 6-12. We are having an Autumn Supper and Song beforehand. We are also selling butterbraids. We are starting Eclectics soon, which is an auditioned choir. Opus and All-State are in November.
Q:What is your favorite song for this concert?
A:Baba Yetu, which is a song from a video game called Civilization 4, but is a Swahili version of The Lord's Prayer. This is sung by the Concert Choir(grades 10-12 and freshman guys).
Q:Why did you become a choir teacher?
A:My love of music and my desire to pass on my love of music.
So there you have it. Now doesn't that just make you want to join choir? Yes, we know. We look forward to seeing you second semester...or else! This is Amber2 and Sara2 for HCHSNews signing off.
We also asked Ms. Thies which choir was her favorite, but she wouldn't answer(everybody knows it's the freshman girls, though!).
